Ghislain Poirier

No Ground Under

CD: $12.98 UNAVAILABLE
No Ground Under is Montreal's DJ/producer Ghislain's first album for Ninja Tune. His obsession for the big, the dirty, and the rhythmic laid the foundation for creating No Ground Under. This album is chock full of what he describes as 'cosmopolitan bass and chunky digital dancehall'. He is a commanding artist who explores new terrains of hip hop and electronic music fused with world riddim idioms twisted deep around bass. 14 tracks. Revolver. 2008.

Ghislain Poirier

Go Ballistic [Vinyl]

Vinyl: $13.98 UNAVAILABLE
MC Zulu, Panamanian born, Chicago raised, jumps off on the third single from Ghislain Poirier's No Ground Under. Go Ballistic is a soca-drenched club banger that unashamedly blows up the spot. MC Zulu comes through with a melodic hype vocal that keeps energy high in the mix. Having released many solo efforts plus collaborations with Ace alone, Kush Arora, and DJ C, MC Zulu is hot property these days (just check his recent feature in XLR8R). Remixers Toddla-T and Duckbeats give the beat a house shuffle treatment that rivals the original in dancefloor mayhem. Not surprising, since Toddla-T has been making inroads remixing Hot Chip, Tricky, Little Dragon, Roisin Murphy, and Kid Acne as well as doing some production on the upcoming Roots Manuva album, Slime and Reason. Duckbeats is Chris Duckenfield, a seasoned veteran of electronic boogie music from the old school WARP roster as RAC and one of the house-heads behind SWAG. King Cannibal is a new signing to Ninja Tune (keep an ear out for the upcoming Arigami Style single) and he toughens up the track to a near techno frenzy of hard beats and defunct rave noises that replaces some of the joy of the original with menace. Ghislain Poirier enlists a buddy by the name of Tony-O, from Parisian crew Ego6, to round out these remixes. He peps it up and plays on it's doubletime soca feel for an over-the-top interpretation that makes the listener understand why Poirier was attracted to him in the first place. Another underground party smashing hit from Ghislain Poirier. Go ballistic!

Seven Davis Jr

Universes

CD: $15.98 UNAVAILABLE
From time to time a DJ or producer comes along who transcends a particular scene, bridges the gap between disparate movements and unites tribal music fans. Seven has that talismanic quality. His productions have a rawness; a loose-knit, lolloping grove that seduces even the most steadfastly stubborn of hips. Seven is a unifying force and the well of support for his endeavors runs deep, from Mos Def to Four Tet to Julio Bashmore and way beyond. As an intergalactic soul record Universes delivered on all front, admirably showcasing the breadth and depth of SDJR's productions and the honesty and humor that makes his music so instantly recognizable. Catch him in this cosmos before he jets off to another time and space.

Sixtoo

Jackals and Vipers

CD: $14.98 UNAVAILABLE
With the dog days of summer nearing a close, Montrealer Sixtoo's latest masterpiece, Jackals and Vipers in Envy of Man, drops onto society. For this new record, Sixtoo delves further into the solo electronics realm. Surrounded by a stack of machines in his studio space, he stitches together a tape-edit record compiled from various live sets. Along the way, these tracks evolve into entirely new compositions, melted down to their basic elements and refined into what we now know as Jackals and Vipers in Envy of Man. The results are mind-blowing. Sixtoo's signature drum-machine fury is combined with dark, melodic electronics to create film-noir style paranoia pieced together into one suite with 13 different movements. Aggressive, deep, complex, spatial, and most importantly, tough as nails. Jackals and Vipers in Envy of Man is a reflective look forward for SixtooÑa beatscape that may require a warmup and a massage before listening. Truly a head-nodding affair of the highest order.

This Record Store Day official 12" release includes the Bonobo remix and the original by Texier. Artwork designed by the excellent Leif Podhajsky, who did the The North Borders artwork for Bonobo.

The pair, made up of Dustin O'Halloran and Adam Wiltzie, have created iconic film scores and forward-thinking ambient groups, releasing a series of game-changing records for Erased Tapes and Kranky. The duo have emerged alongside peers like Max Richter, Hildur Guðnadóttir, Tim Hecker and Fennesz. They count the likes of Jon Hopkins among their fans, who included 'Requiem For The Static King Part One' on his 2015 Late Night Tales compilation.

Now, one could wax poetic about how amazing the label is and how great the artists are and how this album contains new, old, rare and unreleased tracks, but the tracklisting speaks for itself:.
