Scrutiny, the debut album from Moaning's Pascal Stevenson under her new solo alias Fashion Club, explores the mind's complex relationship to morality, and the way structures of power tend to replicate themselves through unexamined habits. Stevenson began writing the songs that would become Scrutiny toward the end of 2018, as Moaning embarked on a European tour in support of their critically acclaimed first album. Between shows, in the back of the band's tour van, she traced early drafts of Scrutiny's instrumentals on her laptop, planting the seeds of what would bloom into her captivating solo debut. While concocting Scrutiny's dreamlike art-rock palette, Stevenson drew inspiration from artists working during the incipient decades of the synthesizer’s lifetime, like Kate Bush, Brian Eno, and Wire's Colin Newman – musicians whose work bridges the gap between disarming experimentalism and pop pleasure. The album similarly channels the influence of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis’s tactile, material production on Janet Jackson’s late ‘80s albums Control and Rhythm Nation 1814, records that exploded the potential of digital music-making and entwined the sounds of new technology with the currents of the body.

No, it doesn't sound like the Butthole Surfers. It was never going to sound like the Butthole Surfers. Get over it!!!

It's time to revisit PAUL LEARY's 1992 debut solo LP the avalanche of sound he titled THE HISTORY OF DOGS, “Revisited” here with two additional tracks that did not appear on the original LP, including one that will soon appear as the first video from the LP “SPEEDO MAN”. You won't believe your eyes. Believe me.

This 1992 LP was WAY ahead of its time originally released on Rough Trade Records during the glory days of Butthole Surfers crash course across the stages of every music festival criss-crossing the globe, this is zany, complex, unhinged, and sometimes gloriously weird music, but it also features some of the most catchy indie pop music anthems you'll ever hear and certainly far catchier than anything you'd ever hear from the BS catalogue of psychedelic hysteria.

Listen to “The Birds Are Dying” or “Fine Home” and then try to say that Paul Leary isn't one of the most gifted songwriters producers of the late 20th century? This indispensable LP reissue (Re-Mastered in 2021 by Paul and Shimmy-Disc founder Kramer) is a wondrous time capsule that brings us back in time to where all were 30 years ago, firm in our belief that there were simply wasn't another band anywhere on earth like Butthole Surfers and firm in the belief that the band's driving musical fall force, PAUL LEARY like his partner Gibby Haynes was one of those once-in-a-lifetime talents that just couldn't be ignored. These two were a force-of-nature. That great band may be in hibernation, but… stay tuned.

Kramer, who played bass guitar in the band in 1985, says, “It was the year of the dog, and I was the bassist in the greatest band in the world. Life was good.” Last year Shimmy-Disc released Paul’s second solo LP, “BORN STUPID” to rave reviews. It was his first solo LP in nearly 30 years. Now it's 2022 and Shimmy-Disc is reissuing Paul’s first solo LP, re-Mastered for Vinyl, with a vengeance. Like Kramer said… Life is Good

Spice

Viv [Clear Sea LP]

Vinyl: $24.98 UNAVAILABLE

The second LP by California rock n roll unit SPICE expands their palette of damaged anthems and addiction poetics with a more bristling, visceral sound, distilled from years in the trenches of bands, break-ups, and breakdowns. Singer Ross Farrar explains their chemistry succinctly: “We all got in a room and this is what came out.” Vivis named for a precursor project of bassist Cody Sullivan and violinist Victoria Skudlarek, but also alludes to broader notions of vividness, sonic, visual, and otherwise. Engineered by Jack Shirley and mixed/mastered by Sam Pura in Oakland, the mix achieves that rare balance of every element being elevated but distinct, with voices, strings, and drums each given space to blaze parallel paths.

Opener “Recovery” captures SPICE at their stormy, weathered best, booming drums and East Bay riffs skidding out in a rockslide of rapture, regret, and bruised melody (“You sacrifice perfect days to laugh through the night / you have to get out of bed / and it’s hard / and it’s hard / it’s so hard to admit”), peaking in Ian Simpson’s poignant single-note vibrato guitar solo; Farrar agrees: “The guitar says what we cannot.” Other tracks embrace the group’s shredded pop potential (“Any Day Now,” “Dining Out,” “Live Scene”) and their speedway ripper mode (“Threnody”), with detours into oblique instrumentals (“Melody Drive”) and orchestral balladeering (“Ashes In The Birdbath”).

But what unites and ignites these songs across different energies and arrangements is their specific sense of emotion. Rawness refined into reckonings, approaching truth, born of cold mornings, bad luck, and too many wrong turns. Waking up where you’re not supposed to be, living a life you don’t recognize. The album ends with no end to its narrative, still fighting, still slipping. Farrar calls “Climbing Down The Ladder” a “relapse song –telling people you’re okay but you’re still fucking up.” Heartbeat drums march under heartbroken guitars in an elegant downward spiral of defeat, delusion, and desperate hope, dreamed more than believed: “I said it was the last time / but I was up so high / 100 miles / 1000 miles / no me in sight / I saw into the next life / I wasn’t dead / I felt so vivid in the next life.

Roscoe is a road dog. The 14-year-old Boston Terrier has been there for the whole ride of Mapache, Clay Finch and Sam Blasucci's band, which has grown from being the casual project of two longtime buds to one of the most formidable cosmic-folk acts around. "Roscoe's been through a lot of shit," says Blasucci, the dog's formal owner. "He's been all around the country, come on tour a little bit." With some bemused pride, Finch points out that, for a few years, he and Blasucci bunked together in a room in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles that was just big enough to fit two twin beds. "It was the two of us and the dog," he laughs. Naturally, Roscoe has found himself the subject of a good handful of Mapache songs in the past - and on Roscoe's Dream, the band's upcoming third LP of originals, he takes center stage.

As the daughter of a blues musician, Chastity Brown was born with an innate ability to channel complex circumstances into beautiful, uplifting songs. But after surviving the isolation of the early pandemic and witnessing the global racial reckoning that manifested itself in the riots mere blocks from her South Minneapolis home, even she is surprised to hear the way her new album Sing To The Walls turned out. "It's a love album, in a way I didn't plan on," Chastity says. Like so many artists who endured the uncertainty of the 2020 lockdown, Chastity's instinct was to turn inward, at first out of self-preservation, and then because the new songs kept coming and coming. Since finishing her last album, 2017's Silhouette Of Sirens, she estimates she's written nearly 100 new songs, 10 of which found their way onto Sing To The Walls. These songs unfold with Chastity's expressive voice and expansive melodies, leading the listener through intertwining tendrils of atmospheric sounds. Even the titles hint at the album's sense of optimistic yearning, from the dreamy opening track "Wonderment," to her ode to healing a broken heart post-breakup "Curiosity," to the pulsing promise of "Hope. " With the exception of "Golden," a searing indictment of white complacency and a cathartic release of post-uprising rage that comes halfway through the album (and was released in an earlier form in mid-2020), Sing To The Walls is ultimately an album about hope, connection, and love; an ode to the sweetness of life, even amidst a pandemic, even in a city that's experienced so much pain. The album was started in Stockholm, Sweden with revered session drummer and producer Brady Blade, with the rest completed at Chastity's own home studio with her longtime drummer Greg Schutte. Additional production and mixing was done by Chris Bell in Austin, Texas. Sing To The Walls is a sonically expansive album; it mines the roots of Americana, folk, and soul music, but Chastity's stories are delivered in a style that feels remarkably timely, modern, and forward-thinking. "I celebrate the emotional richness in the tradition, but in my music I've committed myself to moving forward and reflecting the experiences of those overlooked by tradition. " Chastity Brown has been praised by NPR, CMT, American Songwriter, the London Times, Paste Magazine, and The Independent, among many others, and appeared on the U. K. 's Later... with Jools Holland. She tours nationally and internationally, having shared the stage and supported artists such as the Indigo Girls, Ani Di Franco, Andrea Gibson, Jayhawks, The National, and Micheal Kiwanuka.
